Here’s what I learned from CheckPoint S3E20.

  • “Don’t?” I sense Rockstar bashing in the near-future.
  • brb preparing my sexy thuomp outfit
  • PlayStation 4 consoles in Brazil have an import duty? Well, that would certainly cause the price to rise by over four times the initial USD-equivalent price of the console itself.
  • Unreal Engine 4 is only for PC. That’s fine. I think I’ll join the rest of the world in waiting for Epic Games to port the engine to another platform that needs it–like the upcoming consoles.
  • Now the teaser at the beginning of the episode feels a bit harsh. Of course there will be malware-seeded torrents of PC games available on various trackers. I’m pretty sure every major release in the past decade and a half has a spam-filled copy or honey-pot vector out there in some manner. This is normal and shouldn’t have warranted a PSA, but I suppose that PC gamers feel a bit jealous of the final-hour current-generation console players who have access to this great game and would do just about anything possible to get their hands on a copy.
  • Isn’t reselling access to PBS a crime? If it isn’t, it should be. Shame on Microsoft for pressuring PBS to put content on its Xbox service and then hide it behind the paywall that everyone already pays for.
  • Nintendo invented a new princess character for it’s upcoming Super Mario 3D World. Annnnnnnnd no one cared because it’s a 3D remake of Super Mario World. Bonus Graham Nintendo zing!
  • The Wii is dead in Japan, long live the Wii! Double bonus Kathleen Nintendo zing!

Public speaking for the greater good of mankind.

Or something like that.

From what I have heard about the recent TEDx event that happened in Richmond, VA this past year, I didn’t miss a thing that was relatively mind blowing or important. And that’s fine, because apparently the organizer for the TEDx event had the gall to charge tickets for the event–something that is generally not done for TEDx events.

Richmond has this perpetual self-esteem/identity problem where it sees itself as something as cool as an Austin-like city that deserves to have a properly attended celebration of its diversity and melting pot of the arts but can’t seem to break the mold. I hate that about this city.

Sure, Richmond should aspire to not suck, but it shouldn’t do that by trying to get x amount of influential people (read: owns a business with downtown frontage and/or has significant connections) into a room to hear presentations about what sucks about Richmond and what they can do to fix it. It should just get people into a room and talk about why things are pointlessly embarrassing on a case by case basis. The goal of the discussion shouldn’t be to fix something to be more attractive, it should be to share knowledge and discover what everyone should be addressing at their own levels.

I went off on a pretty wild tangent there, but this is along the lines of what I hope to accomplish in explaining my relationship with esports and writing about all things technology on this blog at bill conference 3.

I think I’ll have slides, because holy shit I am a fucking train wreck when it comes to talking off of the top of my head, but I’m splitting my presentation into two parts. I’m looking to give a short presentation about why I am a horrible writer and then lead into a sort of “this is what I have to deal with” comparison with the current esports scene. I also intend to interrogate whoever is there (who I assume could give less than three fucks about video games and turning it into a spectator sport) about where I should be focusing or even if I have a place in esports at all.

Here’s what I learned from CheckPoint S3E19.

  • Oh MadKatz. How no one gives a shit about your day-late-and-dollar-short Android box with an HDMI port in it.
  • Pokemon finally discovering the third D has been a pretty hot topic in gaming lately. Not that I would know because as much as I’ve wanted to really get up to speed with the Fire Emblem series, I just can’t bring myself to buy a Nintendo platform after they released such an underpowered console with the Wii U. I hear that it’s good… but I’ll stick with replaying Pokemon Red on my Game Boy Advance SP for nostalgia’s sake, thanks.
  • $35 USD to instantly reach the endgame of Everquest 2? Sony still runs the servers for this game?
  • Angry Birds ripping off Mario Kart? Pretty lame.
  • Development parties are all cutting edge and everything, but why do you need to gimmick the hell out of one to make it cool enough to entice folks to come along? It is taking folks from Chicago to San Francisco, which is fine, I suppose, but how many folks will be flying into Chicago and flying out of San Francisco for this event? Why even bother with the train ride? Make it a cruise for crying out loud.
  • There’s nothing to add to Graham’s bit here about the Mojo. Just watch it for yourself.
  • The ticker for this segment is probably the most insightful bit of analysis wrapped in humor that’s actually true that could be said about Square Enix and their relationship with the legendarily popular Final Fantasy VII: “Does Squeenix just hate FFVII?” From all indications, the answer is yes.
  • Noooooo.
  • Kickstarter in AUS/NZ is welcome, but Kathleen’s right. What’re the odds that any offerings from those two countries won’t be completely overpriced to outside markets out of spite? I’m guessing pretty slim.
